Inventors Story

Eric White, Inventor of ElectroBraid ™

Eric was born and raised in a very small fishing village north of Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. Life there was simple and hard. Transport anywhere was mainly by boat. The sea was provider and a powerful, harsh mistress. Eric grew to love and respect it. As a teenager, he went to the big city of Toronto to study fine art at the Ontario College of Art. Big city life wasn't his style, so he moved back to the Maritimes. In the early 80's, shellfish culture was in its infancy and it fascinated Eric. All the research and development was being done by government marine biologists in sheltered coves and inlets. He felt that if the industry was to become a commercial success, it would need viable open water technology. With little money in his pocket and a lot of skepticism from the locals - he decided to take on the challenge.  He formed a company, got a commercial dive license, leased water rights from the government and went at it. Anchoring equipment outside of protective coves, against tide, wind, and ice, proved to be a daunting task in open water. He gained a wealth of knowledge about how to do it. The operation became very successful, producing some of the best Blue Mussels to be found anywhere. The company grew to a four Million-dollar company employing over 56 people when he sold it to a large international shellfish company.

1989 was a change of direction for Eric when he met Jennifer. He had no experience with horses, but he learned in a hurry that anchoring tons of equipment to the ocean bottom wasn't any more challenging than trying to keep horses behind fences. Watching the horses and how they reacted to things was a natural thing for Eric. He listened to all the stories about horses and fences and decided to take up the challenge to make a safer fence for the love of animals.

That became the founding principle for another company, ElectroBraid ™ Fence Limited.

Jennifer Fried

Born in Scotland, Jennifer had her first job before turning one year old as official Mascot on the merchant ship where her dad was chief engineer. Nova Scotia, Canada, soon became home for the next couple of years. Naval duty sent her father to the Korean war and Jennifer back to Scotland. Canada once again became home to Jennifer after a year of schooling in Scotland. Although never brought up around horses, they were a passion for Jennifer from the start. As a girl she'd walk miles to go see one and maybe be allowed to pat it. And, joy of joys, if she was allowed to sit on one. The obsession would not cool. She was well into her early 20's and married before a horse of her own became a reality. She read everything she could about horses. She learned how to care for, ride and show horses. A farm had been a life-long "fantasy" hence the name, Fantasy Farm Arabians when she finally did buy a farm. She and her husband had a variety of businesses: food & hospitality, laundry, and well drilling to name a few. After her husband died of a heart attack, she had to take the reins and run it all. But horses were still her main love and life revolved around them.

She became involved in the local Arabian Horse club, the Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation, served as president of both for several terms and also as a director of the Canadian Equestrian Federation. Her interest encompassed all breeds and disciplines and she tried her hand at most, showing her Arabs in open as well as Arab shows. The universal problem of fences and horses was an on-going battle, not just with her farm but on everyone's farm. The world needed a better fence that wouldn't hurt or maim the animals you were trying to protect. Teaming up with Eric in 1989, they both understood the need to create a safe fence for the love of those magnificent creatures. That became the pivot point for ElectroBraid ™ Fence Limited. The rest, as they say, is history.
